Party Decor: Fairy Flowers Cake Topper
This project is a real-life craft I made for my real-life mini. I used my mini-making skills to create a custom cake topper for my daughter’s 5th birthday - a Fairytale Fête. This tutorial uses materials I had on hand including wooden beads, wood skewers, and crepe paper streamers. If you’re looking for a dollhouse craft, you could easily use the same ideas for a little garden or home decor.
The birthday girl specifically requested this fairy theme based on the Tinkerbell movies. I pulled in some forest references in the decor but we kept it pretty colorful and girly overall! I enjoy baking her birthday cakes myself, and the cake topper is always a fun way to bring the theme together.
Fairy Cake Topper Materials
Crepe Paper (I used streamers from Dollar Tree)
Floral Wire
Paint, Glue, etc
Mushroom Cake Topper Tutorial
Create your own custom mushroom cake toppers by purchasing plain wooden beads shaped like mushrooms. I have also found these locally at Hobby Lobby. They should have a hole all the way through the mushroom stem and cap.
Paint the top of your mushroom cap with your choice of craft paint. I used a couple of colors I had on hand to create a earthy palette. Paint two coats on the mushroom before moving onto the dots.
Create the dots by using the plastic handle of a small paint brush. Dip the end of the handle into your paint, and carefully dot around the top of the mushroom cap. Allow to dry fully.
Cut off a 1 in piece of wood skewer and glue it into the bottom hole of the mushroom. The skewer should stick out about 1/2” from the mushroom so there is a something to stick down into the cake.
Crepe Paper Flower Cake Topper Tutorial
As a beginner crepe paper crafter, I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to make flowers! I first painted some strips of white crepe paper streamers with watered down craft paint. I did a pale blue and pink wash on one half of the crepe paper.
See this tutorial from Martha Stewart on crepe paper flower basics. I scaled it down for the cake topper by cutting strips about 6” long x 1” wide. Once my streamers were dry, I cut them into two styles: a fringed strip and individual petals. Create your flower center/stamen by wrapping a small ball of paper with yellow crepe paper and attach to a 2” piece of floral wire.
For fringed flowers, wrap the strip around the stamen, gluing as you go and keeping the paper tight around the stamen. For petal flowers, cut 8-10 individual petals and glue these around the stamen overlapping as you work your way around. Once the glue has dried, you can fluff out the ends of both flower styles.
Bend the floral wire into a short corkscrew and hot glue this to the top, flat end of the skewer. Trim off any extra wire as needed. Take a smaller strip of crepe paper, about 1/2” wide and wrap it around the base of the flower to cover the connection with the skewer and secure everything down.
You can trim these skewers down depending on the look you want with your final topper. I left mine at 6” to give plenty of height to work with on the cake.
A Fairytale Fête Party Ideas
The party was a hit! We ate cake, played fairy games, and spent a lot of time outside on a chilly December afternoon. Our games and activities included:
Mine your own Fairy Dust! I purchased this set of Break Open Geodes and it was an absolute blast breaking them open. The party attendees were eager to take a turn with the hammer, and most geodes were fairly easy to break open. Definitely do this activity outside as the rocks often shatter into smaller pieces and release some dust.
Acorn Toss! Grab a basket and some fake acorns (or forage for them if you have oak trees!) Take turns tossing the acorns into the basket to see who has the best aim.
Earthy Decor! Grab a bag of preserved moss or grapevine wreaths to spruce up your tables and party displays.
Pixie Dust Relay! Take some basic play sand (or steal it from your own sandbox) and color it using food coloring in pink, blue, green, or other fun colors. Create a relay race where party goers must use a spoon to transfer all the sand from one container to another container across the room. Either work together to move the sand or divide the group into teams. Definitely an outside activity.
Fairy Wing Party Favors! We encouraged our guest to wear costumes or any play dresses they had on hand. We provided each child with a pair of fairy wings to wear during the party and take home with them.
Fairy Treasure Hunt! Hide "fairy treasures" (sparkly stones, small toys, or gold coins) around the yard or venue and let the kids search with clues or maps.
Enchanted Obstacle Course! Create a fairy-themed course with tunnels (log or flower arch), stepping stones, and a "magic bridge."
