Ikea Flisat Dollhouse: Board and Batten Wall Tutorial

The second upgrade for my Ikea Flisat dollhouse is a custom board and batten half-wall. I measured the small downstairs room and have included the same measurements below for anyone to make their own. You just need some simple materials like basswood sheets and strips, cofee stirrers and craft paint. This dollhouse DIY is very beginner-friendly, yet gives your house a neat custom room! I’ve included a link as well to the free download for cutting and gluing templates.

Materials

  • 1/8 inch thick basswood sheet (I purchase locally at my Hobby Lobby)

  • 1/8 x 1/8 square basswood dowel (you need about 15” total length)

  • 1/16 x 1/4 rectangle basswood strip (you need about 15” total length)

  • Wood/Bamboo Coffee Stirrers

  • Wood Glue

  • Craft Paint (I used color Folk Art 2500 Greenspace)

Note: Basswood is not the same a balsa wood. Balsa wood is much softer and porous. I prefer to work with basswood.

Board & Batten Free Printable, Cutting & Gluing Template

To make this DIY even more beginner-friendly, I have made a free PDF download that includes a print-to-scale template for gluing and a cut list for all the necessary pieces.

Cut out all your pieces of basswood, including the base, top and bottom rails, and vertical strips. First, glue the 1/4 x 1/16 rectangle strip along the bottom of base board, gluing it on the front face of the basswood sheet. Next, glue the 1/8 x 1/8 strip along the upper edge of the sheet. This top rail will not be glued to the front surface, but instead glued to the top edge.

Next, glue your coffee stirrer strips in 1 inch increments along the surface front. I found it looked best to start about 1/2 in from the edge, then space them out every 1 inch from there.

The final steps include a coat of paint of your choosing and to install it directly onto your dollhouse with wood glue! Done!
