DIY Dollhouse Living Room Decor

This post is dedicated to the tiniest of tiny living room decor I created for the Modern Moody Dollhouse. While I did purchase a few items from online retailers, I spent a good amount of time crafting books, plants, and other small details to bring the room to life.

I was having way too much fun creating these little elements that I do not have many in progress images. But, as they are common dollhouse items, I am confident you can find other creators’ more competent tutorials out there. ;)

I drew inspiration from designers like Amber Interiors for the varied textures but neutral color palette. I even grabbed some book covers from her web store to make my own miniature versions.

So browse below for some decor inspiration and notes on materials!

Handmade Miniature Decor Items

Ficus-inspired tree made from a real twig and watercolor paper leaves. The planter is a medicine dosage cup covered in a baking soda-paint mixture, and the dirt is coffee grounds.

The small throw pillows are hand sewn from velvet fabric scraps - see pillow tutorial here. The tray is made from bits of basswood and a skinny leather cord.

This vase is made from a wooden bead, covered in the same paint and baking soda mixture I used on the planter. The flowers are real dried flowers from the craft store that I trimmed down.

I cut a scrap of sherpa fabric and trimmed the length of the hairs with fabric scissors to resemble a throw blanket. The portrait is of Edgar Degas and is in the public domain, free to download from The Met’s Archive. I framed it with some basswood strips painted in white.

This is a rug I printed myself on velour paper - see rug tutorial here. To give the fringe effect, I glue it onto a scrap of linen fabric and carefully frayed the opposite edges.

Oh the books! These are tedious to make, although they do turn out so cute. I print off covers of real books and then sandwiched some mat paper in the middle for the pages.

Happy crafting!
